Consumer Expenditure Survey:
1980-2003

Quarterly files provided courtesy of the Congressional Budget Office, who perform some crazy FORTRAN operations on the raw BLS files so that the categories are consistently defined across years. For those interested, this directory also contains stata versions of the periodic expenditure surveys conducted in the US (1888, 1917, 1935, and 1960) and taken from ICPSR.

Current Population Survey, March:
1962-2006

Annual March supplement for all available years with consistent naming convention for the entire window. IPUMS Minnesota.

Current Population Survey, MORG:
1979-2006

Every month, a quarter of the CPS sample is rotated out. This data collection is the merged set of these outgoing rotation groups from all 12 months, yielding a sample 3 times the size of any particular month (e.g. March survey). The CEPR version of these data is a cleaner version of what is available from NBER.

Current Population Survey, Basic Monthly Files:
1989-2006

The monthly labor force survey is the source for US unemployment statistics and these copies are created from the NBER collection. Special thanks to Jean Roth, author of the dictionary files. Most users shouldn't be using this copy, because it's the least clean.

United States Census (PUMS):
1980, 1990, 2000

This is the US Public Use Microsample (5%). IPUMS Minnesota.

Unemployment Insurance Recipients:
1988-2005

The Unemployment Insurance programs in each state investigate a random sample of claimants to verify the accuracy of their claims. This sample is submitted to a Federal office and made available for research. Please contact me directly for more information.

Survey of Consumer Finances:
1977-2001

Files taken from ICPSR for 1977 and from Federal Reserve website for 1983-2001.

Taiwan KAP Surveys:
1965-2003

Files taken from ICPSR but ICPSR does not supply variable lables. The copies in this directory have labels. Users of the KAP series will find the spreadsheet contained in this directory helpful. The newer data (1993+) is from DGBAS.

India DHS Survey:
1992, 1998, 2006

This is a very useful and polished fertility survey.This is the "all India" series taken from measuredhs.org. I'm only saving you an hour by doing this - all that is here is already cleaned.

Taiwan Census:
1980, 1990, 2000

This is the universal sample of Taiwan's census. Special thanks to David Card who paid for these data. Those interested in using these data should contact me.

Taiwan Family Income and Expenditure Survey:
1976-2003

These data were originally cleaned by Deaton and Paxson and updated by me. The files contain rich microdata with income, expenditure, and transfers within the household.

China Census:
1982, 1990

These are the census samples for calculations in my paper on sex selection. The 1982 data are from IPUMSI and the 1990 data are distributed by the China data archive at Texas A & M.

China Census Maps:
1990, 2000

These are the shapefiles provided by the Harvard Geospatial Library. Special thanks to Steven Leung who processed these files.

China Household Income Survey:
1988, 1995

This survey contains rich data on household incomes in China. The only catch is you have to use the data dictionary to identify which variables correspond to each question, no value labels are supplied. All the data and documentation are contained in my directory. I use this survey to impute income to families in the China census data. Files taken from ICPSR. Special thanks to Tian Feng for cleaning these files.

China Health and Nutritional Survey:
1989-2004

This survey is longitudinal and is a bit difficult to use, but it has very detailed information on food intake and family characteristics. I use this survey to impute distance from fertility clinics to families in the China census data. Files taken from UNC-Chapel Hill.

China Health and Fertility Survey:
2000

This is a survey on fertility patterns, contraceptive use, and sexual practices.
